Cheltenham's town lights come on Saturday 21 November, with no ceremony announced. Pittville Pump Room's switch-on is Saturday 28 November, between two markets.
Cheltenham’s Christmas lights come on across the town on Saturday 21 November 2026. Both Cheltenham BID, which delivers the lights, and the council give that date. Neither has announced a stage, a time or a celebrity: on the record of recent years the town-centre lights simply come on at dusk.
The only switch-on ceremony listed anywhere in Cheltenham for 2026 is at Pittville Pump Room, on Saturday 28 November.
Updated 1 October: the BID’s Christmas page (revised 30 September) now dates the town lights to 21 November, and Pittville has become a three-day weekend with the switch-on on the Saturday, not the Friday.
Pittville Pump Room, 27 to 29 November
Visit Cheltenham, which is run in partnership with Cheltenham BID, now lists the Pittville event as a weekend running from Friday 27 to Sunday 29 November, and Cheltenham BID’s Christmas page gives the same split:
- Friday 27 November: evening Christmas market
- Saturday 28 November: Christmas lights switch-on and live entertainment
- Sunday 29 November: family Christmas market
The listing still ends “Full details will be announced soon”. So: no times, no running order and no prices yet. The Cheltenham Trust, which runs the Pump Room, has nothing about the weekend in its own events feed as at 1 October.
Two things about that weekend are unusual. It is three days, where in 2025 Cheltenham BID named a single date, Saturday 22 November, for both the Pittville switch-on and the Brewery Quarter party. And the switch-on falls a week after the town centre lights, where last year the two happened together.
The last time the Trust published a full running order for this event, in 2021, it started at 5.30pm with live music, brought a special guest at 6.15pm, switched the lights on at 6.30pm and finished with a brass band at 7.20pm, alongside a free artisan market in the main hall. That is the shape of the evening, not a promise about 2026.
The Brewery Quarter opens the season, 21 November
The other free festive event is the Brewery Christmas Launch Party, on Saturday 21 November 2026 from 2pm to 8pm, the same day the town lights come on (Cheltenham BID). The BID promises “festive fun, entertainment, seasonal activities, and Christmas cheer”. That is a full week before Pittville, which is a change: in 2025 Cheltenham BID’s own announcement said “Christmas in Cheltenham officially begins on 22 November with free festivities at The Brewery Quarter Christmas Launch Party and Pittville Pump Room Christmas Lights Switch On”, the two on the same day.
The 2026 line-up has not been published.
Why there is no town-centre switch-on
Cheltenham BID says it in terms. Its write-up of the 2022 launch reads: “Please note, there will be no official Christmas light switch on this year, instead as dusk falls thousands of twinkling Christmas lights will come on throughout the town centre.” The year before was the same. The BID’s account of the 2021 launch, on Saturday 20 November, describes roaming performers from 2pm and then simply says “As dusk falls, the stunning Christmas lights will awaken, and Christmas in Cheltenham will have begun.”
What the BID has run instead is a Cheltenham Christmas Launch, an afternoon of free entertainment along the High Street and the Promenade with the lights already lit. Its published programme for that event gives a sense of the format: choirs and bands staged near Cambray Place, near M&S and near Cavendish House from 3.30pm to 6pm, walkabout acts including illuminated stilt-walking angels, a penguin family, Granny Turismo and Father Christmas, with donations going to the Mayor’s charities.
Nothing of the sort is listed for 2026 yet. The BID’s Christmas page, revised on 30 September, lists the lights on 21 November, the Brewery party, the Pittville weekend and late-night shopping until 8pm on Thursday 3 and Thursday 10 December, with council car parks free from 3pm on both evenings (Regent Arcade excluded). It names no launch afternoon on the High Street. If one is added, it will most likely be announced in late October or early November.
The market is the fixed point
The Cheltenham Christmas Market runs 10 to 23 December 2026 on the pedestrianised Promenade. Visit Cheltenham gives the detail: 40 wooden stalls, free entry, a mixture of local craft producers, Christmas gifts, festive food and mulled wine, operated by Cotswold Markets.
That is the one Christmas date in the town centre with a confirmed start, end and size.
Everything else confirmed for the season
- Spectacle of Light, Sudeley Castle and Gardens, 20 November to 30 December
- Santa Express with GWSR, 28 November to 23 December
- The Christmas Meeting, Cheltenham Racecourse, 11 and 12 December
- New Year’s Day Racing, Cheltenham Racecourse, 1 January
The two pantomimes are covered separately in our page on Cheltenham pantomimes and Christmas shows.
There is no ice rink this year. Cheltenham Ice Rink ran in Imperial Gardens from 21 November 2025 to 4 January 2026. In September 2026 the council confirmed it “will not return”, as its three-year contract has ended. The same announcement says the town’s Christmas lights come on from 21 November, and adds a film projection on the Municipal Offices from 3 to 16 December (Cheltenham Borough Council). See our Christmas market page for the full programme.
Still to come
- Times and programme for the Pittville weekend, including the hour of the Saturday switch-on, expected in November
- Whether anything is staged in the town centre when the lights come on on 21 November
- The Brewery Quarter’s line-up for 21 November
Parking on the night
The Promenade is pedestrianised where the market sits, and the nearest council car parks fill quickly on market Saturdays. Which ones charge on a Sunday, which have no one-hour rate and where the free long-stay bays are is all in our guide to parking in Cheltenham. Check Cheltenham roadworks and travel before driving in, because the A4019 speed restriction runs through the whole of this season.
